Automatic Call Routing

Carrier Preselection (CPS)

Our service starts once your outgoing call reaches your local BT switch. We arrange a standing instruction on the BT switch under which BT route all calls to us by default. You are still able to prefix the digits of another carrier should you wish, and such a positive selection by you over-rides the CPS instruction we place on the BT switch. The net effect is that we take the call charges off the BT bill, giving you savings in the process. We do not in any way affect the way you use the phone on your premises. And neither are we involved in incoming calls, which continue to be delivered to you in the usual way.

Escaping Carrier Preselection

You can still choose to send to calls to BT by prefixing the digits 1280. It is often advisable to do this in respect of your computer traffic, as some deals with Internet Service Providers rely upon the call being carried end to end by BT. This is usually for technical reasons, but can also be for charging reasons. If you find your internet access ceases to work after we have arranged CPS, or if you are on an unmetered deal, you should definitely set your computer to dial 1280 to escape our CPS. For Windows machines, this can be done as follows:

For earlier Windows machines: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modems, dialing Properties, tick "To disable call waiting, Dial", and enter 1280, (And of course, check you are using Tone dialing).

For Windows 2000 or XP the sequence is slightly different: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Phone & Modem Options, dialing Rules, Edit, General, then tick the box as for the earlier windows machines, and enter 1280.

For Apple Macs, Go to Apple logo at top left hand corner of screen, Open System Preferences, Open Network (under Internet & Network), Click on PPP (on tab menu), Enter or remove number (e.g.138) under Telephone Number. Click Apply now. Quit System preferences.

We also recommend inserting 1280 in cases where your computer dials a premium line (0906, 0901, etc., in fact any 09 number), such as might be used for information services. In general 09 numbers collect a profit-share for the recipient of the call, and such calls are often cheaper going via BT. If you habitually dial 09 numbers manually, you might also remember to escape to BT by dialing 1280 first.
